Perched at the top of Northcliff Hill, Koyama unites the contradictory forces of futuristic aesthetics and ancient traditions, with Japanese themes dominating the architectural and interior design styles. Natural elements were considered in the building’s spatial composition and the selection of textured and raw materials such as stone, timber and concrete, are offset by sheet-glass panes and brushed steel. Inside, the composition is minimalist, without being stark and vacuous, while the breathtaking view allows one to see forever (full view of Johannesburg, Rosebank, Sandton & Randburg). The exterior features creative use of a myriad of plants, a Koi pond and an enchanting Zen garden. Koyama is built on a mantle of quartzite rock with Japanese gardens flowing between the quartzite outcrops. Koyama is primarily a martial arts dojo on the top or Northcliff Hill, which is also used for private and corporate events because of its Japanese architecture, beautiful gardens and spectacular 270-degree views of Johannesburg. Its minimalist interior provides a blank canvas that can be adapted to suit mans different types of events. The venue can accommodate up to 120 people seated and up to 150 people for a more social standing cocktail type event.
